Deca Durabolin (Nandrolone) – All you need to know
What is it?
Deca Durabolin, also commonly referred to as Nandrolone, Nandralone Decanoate and Deca is a 19-nortestosterone anabolic steroid. It is derived from the testosterone hormone.
It is amongst the most commonly used anabolic steroids currently in circulation and is so popular as a result of it’s high potency vs testosterone at 2.5x more anabolic, as well as being extremely weak on the androgenic scale.
Several different esters are attached, the most popular being decanoate, which has a half life of 12 days, as such, adding to the appeal as when cycling deca, you may only need to inject once a week.
Why and how is it used?
Medically, deca is used on patients in catabolic states to assist in repair and recovery. Namely, major burns, cancer, AIDs and patients in a long term comatose state.
In these instances, the positive effects of the use of deca include, muscle growth, appetite stimulation and improved red blood cell production as well as an increase in bone density. In sulphate form, it has also been used in ophthalmology as an eye drop agent.
However, deca is much more popular for its anabolic qualities, and as such is more commonly used in bodybuilding, weightlifting and powerlifting due to it’s high anabolic potency but also its effects on joints and bone density.
In bodybuilding circles, deca is mainly used as a bulking agent, due to water retention and increase in appetite whilst on cycle, however is also used alongside other AAS for therapeutic purposes.
Most common forms are in the 200mg-300mg/ml range and commonly used doses are anything from 150mg/wk to 500mg/wk. Deca is almost always not used exclusively, but paired with testosterone or another AAS in a “stack”.
How does it work?
Like all anabolics, deca is said to improve protein synthesis, bond well to androgen receptors and enhance muscular development. But, unlike testosterone, it is much less harsh in terms androgenic effects. This is as a result of converting to DHN (dihydronandrolone) instead of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) when broken down.
Another way that deca works is by encouraging nitrogen to be stored in cells. Nitrogen retention plays a huge role in muscle growth. But it get’s better still, there have been links to deca and increased IGF-1 production. IGF-1 is an insulin like growth hormone. Quite simply, the more of this you have in your body, the greater your chances of building quality tissue.

Adverse effects of deca durabolin
Whilst nandrolone decanoate has “milder” side effects than many other steroids, nandrolone does come with its drawbacks. Along with the major side effect of a drawback in natural testosterone production deca does come with other side effects. There is minimal risk of estrogenic side effects on lower doses of deca durabolin, but it is a progestin which can bring on similar traits such as:
- Water retention
- Increase in blood pressure
As for androgenic side effects, because of that low rating you’ve got a slight chance on limited doses. They include things like:
- Excess body hair growth
- Oily skin
- Mood swings
- Low sperm count
Deca can adversely affect your good and bad cholesterol levels too. This means if you already have issues in this area you might want to choose another steroid.
